What our project included
We started to tackle this project by deciding what we wanted the video to be about. Once we figured out it would be about we had to discuss what concepts we were going to use. Our idea that we came up with were the goo effect, which changed brad into a superhero, the elephant toothpaste, that acted as a volcano killing many animals, and lastly the flammable bubbles which burned the chickens. From this we made the script and the storyboard and began filming! Once we were done filming I moved on to editing the video clips. Then we posted it on YouTube!
The science behind it all
The goo: watered down play-dough. This mixture is colloidal meaning the particles are suspended evenly throughout the goo and the particles are able to be viewed through a microscope
Elephant toothpaste: 30% hydrogen peroxide was mixed together with dish soap and a bit of food coloring for effect. To create the reaction we pour sodium iodine. The water vapor and oxygen gas get trapped in the bubbles causing it to foam. The sodium iodine serves as a catalyst that speeds up the reaction and is not consumed by the reaction.
Flaming bubbles: To create this we mix dish soap and water and blow flammable gas into the mixture creating bubbles filled with this gas. When a flame source is held to them a bubble pops releasing the gas that is then caught on fire and a chain reaction is created causing all of the bubbles to pop and a huge flame to shoot up.
Reflection
I thoroughly enjoyed this project because a hobby of mine is filming and editing. Our group did many things well such as figuring out times to work together and videotape. We didn't have many pitfalls other than we had slightly hard time figuring out what our story would be about and it's plot is still a little lame but the important part is we tried very hard and put a lot of determination in making it the best that we could. I learned a lot of new chemistry effects that are all very interesting and fun, not only did I learn about play-dough, elephant toothpaste and the flaming bubbles but I also learned about effects that we did not use such as cool things you can do with dry-ice, exploding eggs, color changing flame and more.
