For our 5th grade curriculum we decided it was important for our students to learn about chemical changes, atoms, matter and the states of matter, as well as metals, non-metals and metalliods. Taking what we know about 5th graders we established teaching methods to ensure a longer attention span. Such as; having them create a foldable to 'trick' them into taking notes, making our notes as colorful, simple, and picture heavy as possible, and doing intriguing and entertaining labs as often as possible.
Overall I enjoyed this project, though I believe it gave me unnecessary skills. Instead of building on my current chemistry knowledge I went back to things I've literally known since 5th grade and learned how to keep younger kids entertained. My group worked alright together though we were not productive until the last minute, because it was such an easy project it worked out just fine. I think we did a good job completing our goals of keeping the notes simple and colorful, having fun labs and thinking of innovative ways to take notes.
